
Since the demise of British Rail the track and stations and infrstructure have been split up from the train operating side of the business. The UK railways network has been split up into 26 separate train operating companies who each run train services (generally) for a given geographical area.
Thameslink run train services on the line that runs from Luton and Bedford, through the City of London, and down to Brighton via Gatwick airport.
The transpennine express runs trains between stations in the northwest and the northeast of England.
Virgin run high-speed train services between London and the North of England and Scotland, and the south and southwest of England to the north and Scotland. Virgin trains run the new Pendolino trains.
WAGN run trains between London Kings Cross and London Liverpool street to Herts, Cambridge, Kings Lynn, and Peterboro.
Wessex trains cover the south coast, the west, and the southwest of England.
